In a small ensemble the bass is often described as the foundation. That makes it sound fixed, but a good bass line is in motion. It can lean into the next chord, hold back a beat, or leave just enough room for the drummer to suggest a turn.
Listen to a chorus while ignoring the soloist for a moment. The bass may be the clearest guide to the form, and sometimes the first player to announce a change in mood. What sounds like accompaniment is also a set of proposals to the rest of the group.
On the next recording you play, try following only the lowest line for one full minute. When you return to the whole band, it may sound less like a lead voice with support and more like several people steering together.
